The Weekly March 3 2023

Farewell Summer…

And just like that, the first trademark Summer in what feels like a decade has come and gone. And god it was good. Satisfyingly hazy, lazy and memory-making. Even when it was (and still is) so humid it felt like far north Queensland, it was SUMMER. Let’s just all take a moment for it. And now with Autumn comes a significant mark on the calendar. It’s International Women’s Day, friends. Next Wednesday, March 8. And this year it’s all about embracing equity. The idea that not only should everyone should be treated equally and given the same opportunities, but it’s the next step — recognising that each person has different circumstances and therefore require the right (not the same) resources and opportunities needed to achieve an equal outcome. It’s a no-brainer when you think about it. So book a lunch, rally the troops and celebrate the day by championing women’s achievements, raising awareness for gender equity or fundraise for female-focused charities. With your nearest and dearest. Preferably with bubbles.

Market wrap

As we said last week – life is all about swings and roundabouts. Case in point: Sydney house prices have risen for the first time since January last year and nationally, we’ve recorded our smallest fall since May. No small feat. According to CoreLogic home price index, Sydney was up by 0.3 per cent and nationally down by only 0.1 per cent. A nice little reprieve for people looking to sell or hold onto some value. Speaking of selling, did you get an evaluation last year? Given the highs and lows of the market since 2019, let alone the last couple of months, there’s calls for fresh housing evaluations to get a current idea of your patch instead of an outdated one – and we couldn’t agree more. If you’re interested in a new appraisal, get in touch.

We while we chat about the interest rate hikes weekly, and while it’s important and type-worthy, it’s tiring to keep reading (or writing) about it with no actionable advice to navigate the road ahead. So our eyes lit up at this article on how to prepare for the fixed rate mortgage cliff (as they call it) when around 880,000 loans go variable this year. You’re welcome.

What’s on

If you don’t have a penchant for 9 holes on a Sunday morning, you might not have experienced Avalon Golf Club – yet it’s a picture perfect venue. So we were very happy to spot an event there on Saturday March 11 with some very delicious special guests, Tothy Brothers Deli. These Northern Beaches boys opened their IYKYK Wheeler Heights eatery in 2022, was named in the SMH Good Food Guide the same year and lucky for those this side of the bends, they’re hosting a pop up kitchen at the Golf Club. Oh and did we mention you could win $5,000 in the Closest to the Pin Competition and there’s also live tunes from Hunter Black? Check it out here and pack the picnic rug.

A shift in season calls for a shift in wardrobe… and finally making some space in the garage for your car, no? Cue Avalon’s so-much-more-than-a-boot Car Boot Sale setting up in Dunbar Park this Sunday March 5. We can’t promise you won’t purchase as much as you sell (goodbye summer gear, hello pre-loved Bassike winter trench) but it’s all in the name of the circular economy. So sign up here or head down early with a coffee in hand and pursue our beloved fancy flea.

Have you spotted those one-of-a-kind terry toweling wide brims around the rock pools this summer? They’re re/lax remade,  the work of local designer Karina who turns reclaimed vintage towels with throwback prints into unique and completely iconic sunhats. So it’s not surprising that Karina, alongside Kim and Kath from Sydney social enterprise The Possibility Project are sitting down to chat all things sustainable fashion, and how we can navigate this complex world to better support people and the planet. In celebration of IWD2023 and, well, the Earth, naturally. Book your spot here.

And we would just like to add a little shout out to one of our fave local businesses who are now under new management. Aval💜n Laundry and Drycleaning Shop 3, 55 Avalon Pde Avalon Beach (Entry via Bellevue Ave) have an amazing promotional offer at the moment. Use the code AVSMS10 and pay with CASH to enjoy 10% off till 31st March 2023. Give them a call on 0403 07 2107 and follow them on FaceBook for further info!
