Avalon Beach NSW 2017

Heading up the ‘Bilgola Bends’ on Barrenjoey Road, you’ll find idilic Avalon over the hill. Avalon isn’t just a Beach suburb, it’s a vibrant and diverse village community with great cafes, shops and schools nearby. It is home to a wide cross section of Australians and visitors too – from city professionals to creatives, authors, painters, gardeners and more.

Located 48 minutes from Sydney’s CBD, Avalon is culturally and environmentally rich. It blends the native flora and fauna of Pittwater and its waterways, with urban buzz, food and a mix of both European and Asian influences. Along Old Barrenjoey Road and Avalon Parade you’ll find bookshops, cafes, upscale fashion, designer furniture and homewares, well-known restaurants and more. It’s an area that’s great for kids, and has a unique rollerskating group that runs regular events on the outdoor basketball courts near the beach.

Crossing Barrenjoey Road to the beach, you’ll find the Avalon Rock Pool at the south end, and crispy waves favoured by amateur and professional surfers alike. The view across the headland is a great way to start the morning with a walk up the southern hill.

On the Pittwater side of Avalon, you’ll find tranquil Clareville, a smaller waterfront suburb known for boating and magnificent sunsets.

Avalon Surf Lifesaving Club runs nippers classes, the Bangally Bar and a range of member youth programs. Educational options in and around Avalon include local government schools, independent and religious schools as well as pre-K and childcare centres. Schools are most commonly reached by bus or car. Many independent private schools on the Northern Beaches and Upper North Shore provide door-to-door bus services to students as far up as the Hitchcock Park Parking Area on Barrenjoey Road near Avalon, Whale and Palm Beach.

Demographics

Similar to Newport and Bilgola, Avalon Beach is a residential community with a majority of homes and apartments being occupied throughout the year, and a smaller proportion being for Holiday Let. Further along the peninsula are Whale and Palm Beach where a small proportion of locals occupy homes permanently, and the remainder are holiday rental.

Transport

To the CBD: Take the B1 Bus from Mona Vale to Wynyard.

Around the Northern Beaches: The 199 Bus travels north and south between Palm Beach and Manly regularly. Ferries to the city leave through out the day.

Avalon has main arterial roads connecting it along the coastline via Pittwater Road and Mona Vale Road. The “Bilgola bends” starts on Barrenjoey Road and takes you to Avalon Village. At the bottom of the hill, turn left.
