The Weekly March 24 2023

The big day is here

Election Eve. It’s like the night before Christmas – except with a sausage sizzle for breakfast, pamphlets instead of presents and a looooong line to participate. Yet there’s an anticipation you can’t deny. Everyone worth their council sticker will be out and about, scouting the quickest voting booth and the best snag, grabbing a coffee pre, post or both and either outrightly debating the merits of their preferred candidates on the street corner to anyone who will listen or discreetly tiptoeing around the subject entirely because you know — money, religion and politics. We’ll see you at the booths!

What’s on

And once you’ve popped your ballot in the box, made your way out of the village and spent the rest of the day watching the polls, don’t forget to join millions around the world and switch off for Earth Hour this Saturday at 8.30pm. Timely, given your inevitable screen time this election weekend. This year, the team behind Earth Hour are asking Aussies to #TimeOutForNature and reflect and appreciate the incredible benefits our natural world provides us. So grab your candles from the freezer (or is that just us?), create some ambiance and make a night of it.

Love the sex, lies and intrigue of suburban marriages and school gate drama in Liane Moriarty’s famous paperbacks? Then you’ll want to dive right into local author Ali Lowe’s fast growing catalogue. The former journalist’s debut novel Trivia Night hit the shelves last year to strong reviews and her latest, The Running Club, has just been released! Gripping, page-turning, deliciously addictive. Lowe is coming to Avalon Community Library to chat all about it. So if you’re a book lover, head down on March 29 6pm – 7.30pm for a bev and some brilliant book chat. Tickets are $10. Book now.

You know that blank wall that’s been bugging you for month? We’ve got the answer. The Northern Beaches is a bit of a mecca for creative folk, and this weekend the Pittwater Artists Trail Exhibition is celebrating just that – creating a space for more than 20 artists to showcase their incredible works this weekend. Tonight is opening night, so grab a drink and celebrate the kick off from 6 – 8pm at the Newport Community Centre or if you can’t make it, head down over the weekend as the exhibition continues on the 25th and 26th 10am – 4pm. Perhaps something catches your eye? You can buy it directly from the artist. Supporting local and adorning those neglected walls at the same time.
