The Weekly 27 January 2023

Back to schoooool

And there you have it. School summer holidays are pretty much fin as we go to print and another chapter of back-to-back beach days, balmy family eves, staying at so-and-so’s house, the local Mr Whippy at ungodly hours and the well worn combination of OOSH, WFH and can-you-please-have-them playdates have come to a close. God it’s good, and it’s also good when it’s over. Back to regular programming. Unless you’re suffering sleep deprivation from the Aus Open and the family of Kookaburras cackling at 4.30am (anyone?). We’re excited to properly get into the swing of 2023… and get a park outside the office.

Market wrap

Yes, the Sydney housing market has seen its steepest annual fall on record, declining 10.9 per cent last year, however the declines have slowed in the December quarter and the Northern Beaches even saw a little lift – a huge relief for those looking to sell. Overall the numbers are down from their peak, but still higher than mid 2020. Read more here. On the subject of selling… everyone loves a pool, right, but does it actually add value to your place when you go to sell? According to the experts, yes siree it does, even when you’re beachside like us. But this does come with exceptions. Young families love it, downsizers not as much. Oh and don’t eat up too much of your yard. So if you’re thinking about selling now or in the future and are currently having *that* chat, have a read of this.

What’s on

Att: Restaurateurs. The most picture-perfect venue in Avalon is still up for tender! Once the Beach House Restaurant and Kiosk at Avalon Beach Surf Life Saving Club, these two spaces have now been closed since mid 2021 if you can believe it. The council opened tender submissions to whip this beauty back into shape last year and it closes soon – 2pm Friday Feb 17th to be exact. Gosh what one could do with a spot like that. I mean, we’re not doing it but we’d love to have a drink overlooking the rockpool sometime soonish, so get to it culinary magic makers. Submit or learn more here.

Now this is the kind of first birthday we can get around. Sir Duncan is turning one and to celebrate their bundle of Spanish joy, Shaun and Tom are throwing a Paella and Pintxos fiesta on Saturday Feb 11th to mark the occasion. Their enviable bar will be open, infamous pintoxs roaming, paella in the pan and Hunter Black on the live tunes from 6.30 – 8.30pm. Tickets are $100 a pop. It’s no mean feat to keep a restaurant running, let alone thriving, coming out of Covid. Congratulations boys, we’ll see you there for a sip and a dip to salut. Book now.

Palmy army, listen up. Anyone that’s been down to the beach after a public holiday knows the kind of rubbish that accumulates. We complain about it, but do we actually roll up our sleeves? The good people of the Northern Beaches Clean Up Crew, a community group who spruce up our area one beach at a time, have organised a Palmy pick up morning this Sunday 29th from 10 – 12.30pm. All you need to do is show up at the grass on the south of the North Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club (directly across from Dunes) and they’ll provide the gloves, bags and buckets. Do your bit, it feels good. More info here.

Got plans for tonight? Get down Bar Elvina for their Summer Spritz Party, because who doesn’t love an Italian fizz overlooking the village on a balmy afternoon? No, not Positano, but close. Kicking off at midday for those still on holiday hours, and with 2 for 1 spritz available from 4pm-6pm and live music from 3pm – 6pm, it’s going to be a goodie. Book now.
